#10 Assignment: Child Labour/Child Abuse

Throughout the whole Introduction to Design Course, what we have learnt was to be put into our design assignment. The theme of this assignment is: Child Labour/Child Abuse.

Research:
Child labour basically means depriving a child from their childhood. Around 215 million children today work, many full-time. They do not go to school and have little nor do they have time to play. Many of these children do not receive proper nutrition or care. More than half of them are exposed to the worst forms of child labour such as work in hazardous environments, slavery, or other forms of forced labour, illicit activities including drug trafficking and prostitution, as well as involvement in armed conflict.

Child abuse on the other hand means doing something or failing to do something that results in harm to a child or puts a child at risk of harm. It can come in a physical, sexual or emotional form. Neglect, or not providing for a child's needs, is also a form of abuse. Most abused children suffer greater emotional than physical damage.

Possible outcomes of child abuse victims:
An abused child may become depressed. He or she may withdraw, think of suicide or become violent. An older child may use drugs or alcohol, try to run away or abuse others.

Artwork:
By putting these daily tragic into art, we started with five sketches in accordance to the theme given. After that, we were to pick one of the five sketches and use it as our artwork by colouring and editing it in photoshop.

The chosen sketch:  Sketch 4
The purpose of this artwork is to illustrate a possible perspective of a child abuse victim. This artwork shows how an abused girl perceive her home to be (horror monster house). The house also shows emptiness and hollowness. The display of emotion is shown in the contrast of the two colours- orange and blue. The orange background where she is standing resembles the sun which represents a source of comfort, the warmth she longs for. The blue is used to represent the darkness she feels of her home. A blackhole is used to show how  she is drawn into this tragedy also, it shows her emotion of a never ending torture and suffering. The girl stands on a colourful walkway which gets darker as it gets closer to the house, she perceives the world to be colourful and beautiful outside of her home.
